Thor 2 sera écrit par Don Payne, scénariste du premier film et de Fantastic Four : Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Chris Hemsworth reprendra le rôle du Dieu du tonnerre aux côtés de Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) et Anthony Hopkins (Odin).

Thor 2 – Thor sera projeté sur de nouveaux mondes
Kevin Feige, le président de Marvel Studios, a révélé à Entertainement Weekly quelques détails sur le scénario de Thor 2. Alors que nous attendons toujours la confirmation que Patty Jenkins sera à la barre du projet en tant que réalisatrice, Feige a révélé que le nouveau scénario projettera littéralement Thor dans de «nouveaux mondes».
Toujours selon Kevin Feige, l’histoire s’articulera principalement sur la relation qui unit Thor (Chris Hemsworth) et Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) et de la nouvelle dynamique entre le dieu nordique et son père Odin, joués par Anthony Hopkins en plus d’accroitre et d’explorer les limites des neuf mondes.
Selon les légendes nordiques, les neuf mondes sont unifiés par l’arbre du monde Yggdrasill autour duquel existent différents royaumes : Asgard, la maison des dieux nordiques; Alfheim, la maison des elfes de lumière; Hel, le royaume des morts; Jotunheim, la terre des géants; Midgard, la Terre; Muspelheim, la maison des démons; Nidavellir, le royaume des nains; Svartalfheim, Accueil des Elfes noirs, et Vanaheim, la maison du Vanir, une race soeur des Asgardiens.

"Il y a beaucoup de scènes que j'ai aimé. Certainement que ma préférée de toutes, parce que ce fut aussi un excellent jour de tournage [...], est celle avec Anthony Hopkins lorsque je découvre que je suis le fis de Laufey. Jusqu'à ce moment, nous n'avions tournés que les scènes d'actions."
